A traditional Malayali wedding is a very short and sweet ceremony. It does not have the religious compulsions of other Hindu weddings.
BEFORE THE WEDDING
Muhurtham
A traditional Malayalee wedding starts with exchanging and matching of horoscopes by the parents of the boy and the girl. Muhurtham or the auspicious date is then finalized in consultation with the astrologers or temple priest. A special date is selected and fixed for the ceremony.
Nitchayam
The nitchayam or engagement ceremony as it is popularly known is fixed by the elders to announce this day to their family and friends. The prospective bride and the groom are not present on this occasion. Normally the elders in the family conduct this ceremony.
Avaniyoonu (Traditional Feast)
After receiving blessings, the groom must dine with the elders of his family and relatives. This dinner is known as Avaniyoonu. The day before the wedding, a traditional dinner is served at the bride's residence. The bride is seated facing the east, and she has a traditional five-course vegetarian meal with her family members.
